Acne is a problem common to a lot of people between the age group of 12 and 25. But sometimes older people can get affected too. Acne affects the face and sometimes the neck, back and chest area too. A lot of teenagers develop acne as the body produces more sebum in these developing years due to all the hormonal changes that occur in the body because of puberty. These changes stimulate the sebaceous glands, these glands lie below the skin and produce oil or sebum. Sebum helps to keep the skin smooth and supple.

Mild Acne:

There are tiny pores on the surface of the skin which allows the sebum to come on to the skin surface. This makes the skin greasy. In some cases more sebum is produced than others, people with oily skin fall under this category. Due to the cell renewable process sometimes the dead skin cells block the pores. These are called comedones or whiteheads or blackheads .When sebum gets collected under these blocked pores, they develop into tiny spots called pimples. In most cases acne does not progress beyond this and may last not more than 4-5 years. But in some cases it may last longer and cause a lot of distress

Moderate to severe acne:

The sebum that gets trapped in the pores acts as an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. A bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes starts to breed and multiply in these pores. It is normal to have a small number of bacteria on our body but in case they multiply in a big way it causes problem. These then cause the skin to react and cause inflammation. As the skin gets inflamed, the area around the pore becomes red and puss or pustules gets accumulated in the pores causing a lot of discomfort. Sometimes these become larger and develop into nodules and even cysts. These spots do heal but they tend to leave a scar on the skin which stays for many months. These acne scars vanish after a while in most cases but sometimes they remain and become a cause for concern as it mars the skin. These scars are formed due to the collage.n getting damaged because of the inflammation. The condition becomes worse when the pimples and whiteheads are picked or rubbed

Acne is a problem common to many. And in today’s world there are a lot of factors that make this problem worse. The reasons could range from hormone imbalance to greasy bad makeup, anxiety, stress, menstrual cycle and even changes that occur in the body due to pregnancy.

Some other causes of acne:

Sometimes, certain hormonal changes in girls and women may also become a cause for acne. Condition like polycystic ovary syndrome and other hormonal conditions in which excess male hormone are produced in the ovary or adrenal gland. These conditions worsen the acne and cause other symptoms too, like thinning of the scalp hair, extra hair growth on the face or body (hirsutism) and some other problems.
